History

Like many discoveries of artifacts on the beach of Juan Dolio over and over again prove, the Playa Juan Dolio on the south coast of the island of Hispaniola had already been settled by the native inhabitants, the Tainos. The natural bay with a gently slope and sandy beach granted their boats protection from storms and rough seas.

The caves nearby offered former inhabitants refuge during hurricanes. In the later centuries many ships seeking protection missed the narrow entrance between the reefs and so were many sailors on the run from storms or pirates, wrecked on the seabed of the Caribbean. Testimonies of this adventurous times in front of Juan Dolio are wrecks, cannons and anchors.

Since the eighties, the once so small fishing village of Juan Dolio became increasingly a preferred international tourism spot.

The small village of Juan Dolio is in the south of the Dominican Republic, about 50 miles east of Santo Domingo where you will find pure relaxation. In a good 5 kilometer arc is the beach of Juan Dolio gently sloping along the Caribbean coast. On the 30 meter wide and sandy stretch of coast beach lovers and water enthusiasts will find plenty of space to enjoy a whole day in peace under the Caribbean sun and its turquoise waters.
The center of Juan Dolio is small with friendly, fun-loving people and many small bars, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops which open until late at night.

Juan Dolio has also an international diving school and is home to two major golf courses in the south of the Dominican Republic - the Metro Country Club and Guavaberry Golf & Country Club. More information and photos related to golf courses here.

The central location of the village is a very good starting point for countryside trips, to the capital Santo Domingo, the tourist spot Boca Chica and is only 10 minutes from the city of San Pedro de Macoris.
